Qualifications & General Animal Knowledge: - Skilled with caring for livestock/farm animals: horses, cattle, chickens, sheep, goats, and pigs (as well as domestic animals, and reptiles).
- Training horses and dogs.
- Exercising horses (lunging, walking, trotting, ground pole-work, hindquarters control, moving shoulders, sidestep, up-hill & down-hill exercising, etc.)
- Turn in/out, wrangle, and cattle drive.
- Mucking stalls, cleaning/emptying and filling water troughs.
- Organizing and cleaning barn and tack.
- Feeding hay, pellets, grain, and treats!
- Ability to identify lameness, illnesses, and safety concerns.
- General familiarity with equine (and other animal) first-aid; how to administer/apply medication, care for wounds, take vitals/temperature, distribute dewormer.
- Meet/schedule veterinarian and farrier.
- Experience with handling potentially dangerous animals using my sensitivity and understanding of how to react in the best possible way.
- Capable of safely capturing a stray or loose animal.
- High awareness of how to proceed with caution while working with an unpredictable animal.
- Attentiveness to animals in need, highly conscious of hazardous conditions in an unsafe environment, whether in a household or in the wilderness.
Livestock Experience: SIRE Therapeutic Horsemanship, Spring, TX Volunteer Leader/Side-Walker 2019-Current - Working with sound horses.
- Assisting people who have special needs by using therapeutic horsemanship activities.
- I groom and saddle/bridle the horses to prepare them for each lesson.
- Walk for 45 minutes during class, briefly jog and support the rider.
- I would either lead a horse during each lesson or walk alongside the horse and rider to assist with balance, reinforce the instructor’s direction, and support in case of an emergency.
- The priority is always the rider’s safety, so making sure the horse is lead safely and making sure the rider is supported.
